The Camel was notorious for two things, killing enemy pilots, and killing its own. With a short nose and prop, rotary engine, guns, pilot and fuel centered so compactly, it was hideously unstable to fly. On the other hand, if you could learn its quirks, that instability made it extremely maneuver, so that sometimes pilots would make a left turn by turning 270 degrees right. The Guillow was a nice kit, part of its Deluxe line, full 1/12th scale. My former roommates insisted that I paint it in hideous pastels so it wouldn't look so warlike, and I did. After I had moved elsewhere, I ripped off the wing covering, used hard wires for the rigging, and painted it akin to the look on the Guillow box. If you look close, you can see some crudeness, but all-in-all, a nice kit. |

I did the 1/6th scale Proctor Camel after the Albatros DVa. The Proctor kit was much more of a real kit. Pieces that fit together, pieces pre-cut to size, that kind of thing. Much easier to work with. Guns and engine by Williams Bros. I did the paint by mixing some blend of green and brown. Then, before putting brush to plain, I glopped in some wood varnish, gave it one swirl, and threw it on. |
